The "1-Minute" Review

A Phone-PDA hybrid with excellent corporate e-mail support. Research In Motion's BlackBerry 6280 features a large monochrome display, an integrated and backlit QWERTY keyboard and a thumb-operated trackwheel in a unit that is a bit wider and heavier than a newer-model cellphone. Voice transmission does not require a headset: users can put the 6280 up to their head just like they would a mobile phone, although the unit may feel a little strange at first thanks to its size and shape. A hands-free headset is also included for those who prefer or need it. Most standard phone features are included, except for a speakerphone function and Bluetooth compatibility.

The 6280's data-handling and messaging capabilities are impressive, although potential users should note the differences between operating with BlackBerry Enterprise Server software installed on their company's servers, and operating with the BlackBerry Web Client Web-based interface. While either arrangement will give you the ability to check your MS Outlook or IBM Lotus Domino e-mail account, and open popular file attachment types such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPerfect, PDF and ASCII, only Enterprise Server users can browse Web pages in HTML (Web Client users are limited to WML browsing at present, although RIM has promised a downloadable update later this year).

Users should also be aware that for automatic wireless e-mail updating, you need to remain in a GPRS coverage area: this will vary by location and service provider, so you are well advised to do some checking before you commit. The 6280 also supports two-way SMS text messaging, and comes with a suite of the usual business software applications. Java (J2ME) is supported, so users will have a wide choice of downloaded mobile software. One limiting factor in using the 6280 as a mini-laptop is the lack of an SDIO slot for portable Flash memory: users will have to be contented with the unit's built-in 16MB of storage until they can synchronize with their laptop or desktop, using the included mini-USB cable.

It's a great phone and ahead of its time.

More than just a phone, a quick and convenient way to get email, phone, etc in one place. Very happy to have it! This review is being written in 2011, so the phone is outdated compared to what BB has to offer now, but if you're looking for a BB phone (they're the best on the market and have been for years), but you don't want to pay for a new one, this could be a viable option for you. I decided to purchase it in additon to my current BB because its an important part of the company's history as the last monochrome model and the last member of the 6200 series. Less

Great PDA, lousy phone

I bought this device for the convenience of PDA plus phone in one unit. I have found the voice quality to be inconsistent and frequently bad enough for people at the other end of a call to complain to me. It is a great email device, but without being a good phone it is not worth keeping. I will be replacing it with a good phone.

Amazon

Cingular is deceptive!

from Amazon
My review is on Cingular. I bought a phone w/service and was told I could return for full refund and only charged for any air time used. THEY LIE. THE PHONE DID NOT WORK IN MY AREA AND I CANCELLED THE NEXT DAY. THEY ARE CHARGING ME FOR ACTIVATION even though it never worked in my area. If you are...More

great when it works, voice quality is poor

For email and calendar sync this unit works very well. I find myself typing long emails, just because I can. But it is finicky. Once it is full of email menu choices are slow to respond at times. I have had it turn off for no reason, and refuse to connect to the network until popping out the battery. This says nothing about voice quality on Rogers GSM network... I travel extensively across Canada, and no matter where I am, voice quality cuts in and out, I have already demanded another phone (only) device just to handle my 1000+ voice min/month, I just can't stand trying to talk on it anymore. I even had the handset replaced and it was no better.. rogers claims I am the 'only one' in hundreds of users with this problem. On the upside, battery life is awesome even with lots of calling. It is cool

I gave this phone high ratings because it looks cool and it makes you look rich. It also works well and nobody really knows how good it is except me

Great unit when it works--

unit worked for average of 45 days and then stops receiving email until it is rebooted, loses connectivity with network about every 30 minutes and gives no indication. ATT not accepting returns after 30 days of use. Claim it is a redirection issue and has not been resolved.
