The "1-Minute" Review

A compact mobile handset for the youth market distinguished by its sliding body design. Instead of using the the more usual hinged flip layout to combine small size and decent screen dimensions in a single package, Kyocera's designers opted for a novel approach. When changing from compact to talk configuration, the top face of the unit with the screen and navigation buttons slides lengthwise to reveal the keypad, and lengthening the handset from three and a half to almost five inches. While this gives the Slider a unique persona, it also makes it more fragile than flip models, which are not exactly reknowned for durability themselves.

The Slider's greatest strengths lie in the style department. Potential users will like the choice of electric blue or orange casings, since almost every comparable flip model comes in silver, silver or silver. Voice dialing is also sure to be a hit, and the Slider even has a feature that automatically adjusts the ear volume to the level of the user's surroundings -- perfect for taking calls in a noisy bar or at a party. Customizing your phone is well-supported, and experienced users will find all the usual options to explore: ringtones, screen savers, even cartoons to associate with phone book entries.

Beside the model's fragility, another major weakness is the keypad: the keys are too small for most adult fingers. Voice dialing bypasses this problem, but it's hard to avoid the keypad entirely. The screen is unremarkable: relatively small, and not exceptionally bright or clear, despite 16-bit (65,000) color.

Reliable

from Amazon
The phone came with tons of features that I didn't expect, a nice surprise. It's been almost 3 years in use without any issues. I have accidentally dropped the phone a few times but no malfunction, nothing. Overall I'm very happy with the purchase. LN

I had saw this phone from a friend of mine but she had verizon as her provider. I thought to myself cute phone, then virgin mobile had it. It is a cute phone and small and compact but there is no case and you cant get wallpapers, or musical ring tones. You can get the ring tones that are poly but not the actual song playing. Its also not a camera phone which I knew already prior to purchasing it. But its a ok phone. I loved it when I first got it and I still do even though it dropped and now has a underneath crack lol. I need a new phone now :-/ this phone does get damaged easily as well. Less

Overall if your looking for a cute little phone you can keep practically anywhere but you only plan on havign it for about a year and a half this is probably the perfect phoen for you...oh and if you have good hearing!! i miss my slider

I had the slider for over 2 yrs, while I did not like the sliding action (it sometimes slid 1/2way open) I did like that it had speaker phone, the ring was nice and LOUD (not like my flip phone now) Now that I Up?graded to a samsung a660???? I MISS MY SLIDER!!

I've been with this phone for about 2 years and 3 months and my screen doesn't go black and shut off randomly and there's no delay with buttons and such. However, the problem I have with the slider is the low battery life -- it gets to be pretty annoying after a bit. Aside from that, it's a cute design, great volume, very simple to use and (as mentioned countless times) very durable (I think the drop counts are about 3)! Less

I've owned this phone for about a year, and it has been the most exceptional piece of technology I have ever owned. First off, let me say this: in the year that I've had this phone, It's been dropped out of high windows onto concrete, has been slept on, kicked, dropped, you name it : and the only scars on it are a few minor scratches!!! The features on this phone are pretty cool- no advanced features like web browsing or downloadable games, but the games on there will keep you busy and the sliding desgin is really neat. Virgin Mobile's service is excellent, as well. I've had phones before this one with Virgin's service (None were as wonderful as the V5 slider) and they always had all of the bars almost everywhere I went, even on a weekend trip to Canada! The pricing on the plans are only for people who rarely use their phones, though. And about this "lookout guy" and his rundown of the prices: the line "do some freshing up on your math skills" makes me laugh every time I see it because he obviously A.) hasn't read the costs in every booklet and every webpage that has virgin mobile on it or B.) (I like to think it's this one) he doesn't know how to do math! I've had the Minute to Minute plan for all of my Virgin mobile phones, and It's quite simple: 25 cents a minute for the first 10 minutes for each day, 10 cents for every minute after the initial 10 minutes every day. I have no idea where this guy pulled the "$1.50 fee" out of his head, but the only thing I can think of is the first 10 minutes costing 25 cents, but this would mean that the so called "fee" would be $2.50. He just simply does not know what he's talking about. Also, Mr.Lookout guy, it only costs money to look at your balance the third time you look each day! Please, the next time you criticize something so harshly, do your research and try owning the product that you're criticizing! There are no hidden fees here, folks- after looking at my balance and knowing exactly how much I ued my phone and how much I should have spent, it's always correct! The bottom line for this phone AND virgin mobile: If you hardly use your cell phone OR if you're a teen, this is a great plan and phone. Less
