The "1-Minute" Review

A phone-plus-PDA combo with a high-resolution display intended for business users. This is not a true smartphone: it is a wireless data device first and a mobile second. Phone capability requires the use of a headset, although there are plans for an OEM cover accessory that will let users put the unit up to their head like a conventional handset.

The Tungsten W's 33-MHz Dragonball processor and slightly older OS version (Palm OS 4.1.1) sacrifice high performance for longer battery life and efficiency. Palm OS 4 supports Web clipping applications, which allow users to browse websites using very little bandwidth, while its successor does not. The Tungsten's Palm OS 4.1.1 is enhanced to work with the unit's striking 320 x 320 pixel, 16 bit 65,000 color display. Some games may lag noticeably, but for almost any other situation the pairing of OS and display works well. Battery life is exceptionally good.

Business users might not be bothered by having to use an earbud to transmit voice, and may forgive the lack of speakerphone and voice dial. Equally, they may or may not be bothered by the Tungsten W's hit-and-miss support for email protocols: POP is supported, so public email services like Hotmail and Yahoo are simple to reach, but to access email accounts protected by a corporate firewall, users will have to sign up for special redirection services from their provider, which will cost them extra.

Putting all this together, you have an incomplete package for the business user, and those who are considering the Palm Tungsten W will have to pay close attention to comparing their needs to the unit's strengths and weaknesses.

I've had mine replaced twice now for the same reason -- the socket for the ear piece malfunctioned making it impossible for whoever you are talking with on the phone hear you. Palm has been okay with customer service, replacing my unit each time I've complained about the problem above. However, they will not send you a replacement until they've received the malfunctioning unit. This means you'll be out of PDA for a good 10 business days at the minimum. Plus, what they'll send you is not a new one but refurbished ones. This means it's a unit that may have been returned by the previous owner due to some malfuntions, too. Now, just as I got my second replacement, there's this error that keeps on showing up: "SIM not found. PHone will be turned off." or something to that nature. Then I loose mobility -- friends cannot call me up, etc. Worse is that the unit does not automatically turn on the phone. I have to manually check every now and then to make sure that my unit is still recognizing my SIM. If not, then I have to manually turn the Mobile on. It's frustrating. My advice: Tungsten W is good as a PDA, very bad as a mobile phone. I am trying to get an upgrade to Treo 6XX. Less

Pro: Handy for mobile proffessional Con: No bluetooth connectivity Basically a versatile PDA but lack speaker phone, bluetooth connectivity and camera. Upgrade model should accommodate these for optimum use.

phone features suck

from Yahoo
Pro: good connected palm pilot features Con: poor phone features If there was a good quality flip cover the phone features would be adequate, but the one that is available, made by Ternary, is a piece of junk, therefore only phone option is the less than perfect ear plug. Overall a waste of money compared to other products available.

The only flaw is the lack of a built in mic and speaker. The Ternany Flip Cover would compensate for the lack of a built in speaker and mic but it is not very durable. I have bought 2 of these flip covers already. My dream Palm would be a Tungsten W with a built-in mic and speaker, a camera, a recorder, and backlit keyboard so I dont have a hard time typing in the dark. Less

In the other hand it has great features, but if Palm decides to make a new model, it must have camera and bluetooth. Less

Not only does it have probably the worst carrier in AT&T but also a very fragile fiddley earpiece. The fact that Palm hasn't done the job in regards to the phone aspect is really a shame and it really does spoil the whole package, not to mention their total lack of quality support.
