The "1-Minute" Review

What's good

  • Large HD resolution screen
  • Expandable storage space
  • Fast quad-core processor

What's bad

  • Built-in storage might run out quickly
  • Comes with software extras that may not appeal to some users

The original Samsung Galaxy Grand turned out to be quite successful despite its flaws, so the Galaxy Grand 2 is even more well regarded by reviewers because of the improvements it brings. In fact, it handles its role as a successor so well that the team at GSM Arena have gone so far as to call it, "a sequel made in heaven."

One of the improvements brought by the Grand 2 has to do with the screen. Reviewers have noted that the original model suffered from a below average display, but luckily this version is victim to no such thing. It boasts a 5.25-inch HD touchscreen display, so you should be able to enjoy HD content problem-free. And not only is the display here bigger, it also shows more detail because of the higher resolution.

The quad-core processor on the phone is faster than ever, and as Jamshed Avari of NDTV notes, it is able to deliver "superior performance." And keep in mind, this is only one aspect of what is recognized by reviewers as a generally well-rounded product. One that is based on "a very sensible balance between price, features and performance."

The Grand 2 does miss out on a number of things, however. Although it offers dual SIM support, it lacks 4G LTE connectivity. And even though the amount of RAM is commendable at 1.5GB, internal storage space is quite limited at only 8GB. Fortunately, microSD cards can be used to compensate. And 4G coverage still isn’t as widespread as 3G anyway.

It’s clear that this is not a perfect phone. Still, most reviewers think it shows promise, including Fone Arena’s Monish Kumar who referred to it simply as “the phone to get if you are looking for a higher mid-range Samsung smartphone.”

The Grand 2 price varies across markets, and we’ve already mentioned that there are three different models, all shipping to different regions. In its main markets, the Grand 2 is priced at around €250 (the equivalent of roughly $350) off-contract, which is a very reasonable price.

Its biggest rival at the moment is the 5.5-inch HTC Desire 816 that is just slightly more expensive, but praised for its looks. Another option for buyers looking for the power of the Snapdragon 400 chip at an even lower price is the 4.5-inch Motorola Moto G, running on a near-stock version of Android.

All in all, the Grand 2 seems to have hit the sweet spot between price and function: it’s affordable, yet it is not making any huge compromises, and this makes it one of the best mid-range smartphones to get at the moment.

Well, even in such an impressive sample, it's near impossible to find a device with both dual SIM support and LTE that's not a phablet. Not even the Samsung Galaxy S4 mini does offer both features in the same package. LTE may as well be irrelevant in most markets where dual SIM is usually in high demand - but it says something about Samsung's plans for the Galaxy Grand 2. And even if LTE isn't a big decider overall, the Grand 2 is still one of the most feature-rich packages in its category.

It's no surprise that competition in its range is hot right now. Features that were once exclusive to phones twice that price are tempting users, and multinational brands now find themselves competing with increasingly well-made phones from local manufacturers.

Still, most phones in its price range tend to advertise a single trick such as a full-HD screen or new processor, while neglecting to mention that these things aren't very useful in isolation. In contrast, Samsung has delivered a well-rounded product that seems to strike a very sensible balance between price, features and performance. Large screens on phones at this price point are no longer crippled by low resolutions, and "quad-core processors" actually have enough meat on their bones to deliver superior performance.
