RATING
Based on 7 reviews

The new Kobo Aura HD reader is positioned as a premium e-ink reader. The manufacturer goes so far as calling it the Porsche of e-ink readers. According to the reviewers, this claim is largely met.

Rather than attempting to undercut Amazon on price, Kobo chose to provide deluxe features. The display is a large 6.8" screen and it features a 265 dpi display. At 1440 x 1080, it is the classic aspect ratio of 4:3. Before buying, check out the pricing and availability of books that you like. Some reviewers commented that Kobo's store has higher prices and a smaller selection than Amazon's selection.

The Good: Larger size, high resolution display; ergonomic details and build quality; supports EPUB format and Adobe DRM.

The Bad: More expensive than Kindle's e-ink readers; e-ink is not competitive with a tablet display and it is not good as a general purpose web browser; Kobo's store may not have some titles that you want.

Tech Advisor

An ebook-reader with integrated front light and high-resolution screen

from Tech Advisor

Although rather plasticky just like the Amazon Kindle, the Kobo Aura HD felt to us like a better quality product – even with all the snags and problems we experienced getting our own books onto it. In the end comfort of reading is what e-readers are also all about, and this device can provide just that.

High-resolution screen and superior reading light elevate the e-reading experience

The Kobo Aura HD’s high-resolution screen improves the reading experience by making fonts crisp and clear at any size. Unfortunately, the Nook and Kindle E Ink readers already do a pretty good job of this and the Aura’s display doesn’t surpass them by much. Luckily, the Aura’s ComfortLight is evenly distributed across the screen, something neither the Nook nor Kindle can claim. While it can’t boast as many in-book extras as B&N or Amazon, it is solid on the basic features that e-book readers want.

High quality E Ink display, ergonomically and aesthetically pleasing design

Kobo's claims that page turns are 20 percent faster on the Aura HD do seem correct, as swiping from left to right on the screen delivers the next page of an ebook almost instantly. However, if you're expecting the speed or performance of an Android tablet then guess again, because, as with most ereaders on the market, touch commands can still be frustratingly less responsive than we're completely happy with, especially while typing complicated WiFi passcodes, for example.

GigaOM

A “luxury” e-reader that’s not worth the price

from GigaOM

Kobo says the Aura is aimed at avid readers who aren’t particularly price-sensitive, but even those who don’t care that this device is $40 more than the Glo shouldn’t automatically trade up: The Aura’s added bulk is not a luxury feature.

The Aura might be the best e-reader on the market (it is), but it’s tough to recommend that anyone currently swimming in the Kindle pool hop the fence and join Kobo’s party. Amazon has created a robust ecosystem that rewards readers who go all-in, and once you’ve tasted those rewards, you’ll miss them too much. But if you’re a ravenous book lover who has largely ignored the Amazon Prime extras, and you don’t really care what Stephen King is doing, the Aura HD is the best of the e-readers.

Kobo's most luxurious ebook reader yet

The Kobo Aura HD is a mighty fine e-reader – the large, high-definition display is a pleasure to read on, and the front light is as bright and even as that on the Kindle Paperwhite. It really is as luxurious as e-readers come. The one fly in the ointment is the price: at £140, it costs more than most other e-readers on the market, and it isn't that much cheaper than compact tablet rivals. Had it been £20 or £30 cheaper, we'd have recommended it without hesitation. As it is, it falls just short.
