A good first attempt, but not quite the utopia that was promised

So is this really the most powerful phone on the planet? Well, not really. We aren’t saying it is a bad phone. For a company that is just one year old, Yu Televentures have designed a good looking phone with top of the line internal specifications. But there are issues with the phone – most of them on the software side which can be fixed with future software updates. The metal body does heat up when using heavy applications due to the Snapdragon 810 chipset. Among the good points you have the camera performance, the tweaking ability of the Cyanogen OS, a wonderful design, lovely display and good earphones.

Overall, the YU YUTOPIA is a great attempt from an Indian smartphone maker. The smartphone is extremely solid and is quite a looker, although we hope YU gets more colours for the device. Now, in terms of why we think that the phone is not worth considering because of the price segment it belongs to.

Work reasonably well with great specs on paper
Micromax Yu Yutopia
For a first-time flagship, Yutopia is not a bad effort at all. It’s got all the specs on paper, has a nice design, and performs reasonably well. The 2K screen is great for those who like watching videos and the rear camera does a decent job too. But does Yutopia make other flagships, which...More
For a first-time flagship, Yutopia is not a bad effort at all. It’s got all the specs on paper, has a nice design, and performs reasonably well. The 2K screen is great for those who like watching videos and the rear camera does a decent job too. But does Yutopia make other flagships, which come with their legacy and brand value, seem redundant? For now, I can’t say it does.

The Yutopia is certainly a good first premium effort from Yu but it's far from the utopian smartphone that the company envisioned. Simply cramming in top-end components to fit a desired budget doesn't necessarily guarantee the best product. The Yutopia does have its share of redeeming qualities like the excellent 2K display, very good build and finish, quick charging, great multimedia and services integration in the OS and quality bundled accessories...

However, there's plenty of scope for improvement for the next version. The current fingerprint sensor is a bit of a hit-or-miss affair, battery life could have been better, overall camera performance feels underwhelming and there's really nothing new to say about the heating issue from the 810 chip. We would also like to see NFC and maybe wireless charging included in the next iteration.

The Yu Yunique is a pretty good budget option, especially if you’re looking to buy a first-time smartphone or hoping to get one for your kids. It ticks all the right boxes and does the job. If however, you think that pure Android is boring and want more customisation options, then the Yuphoria or Xiaomi are always an option.

The Yunique is defined by its price, and the fact that it undercuts the Xiaomi Redmi 2 by a significant amount. In some ways it's better - the styling has more personality and stock Android has its universal appeal. However, the battery is weaker and the camera struggles more. These are the compromises, and if you're okay with them, you can save the Rs. 1,000 and be happy. Both phones are otherwise great performers with superb displays and of course 4G LTE support. Not too long ago, it would have been impossible to imagine such devices at these prices, and now we actually have multiple options. This is a great time to be shopping for a low-cost phone.

We feel that YU Televentures seems to have a winner on their hand with Yunique. But this is only if the company can deliver to what it promised during the launch – which is after sale service and warranty to consumers who flash their devices to a custom ROM.

The Yu Yureka Plus is a good 4G smartphone for the price, even though it is not a major upgrade over YUREKA. It directly competes with the Lenovo K3 Note, which costs Rs. 9,999 that has an edge when it comes to performance and battery life. YU has improved the camera and offers a 1080p display, but the battery life is average and heating issues still exist. Those things aside, the YUREKA PLUS runs on Cyanogen OS with a lot of customization options and security features, compared to other smartphones in the price range. The smartphone is only available through flash sales on Amazon, which is common these days.

The Yu Yureka Plus is a slight functional upgrade over the Yureka. It looks the same from outside, performs similarly, and still has a weak battery strength. It gets an upgrade to a 1080p display, a better and faster Sony IMX214 sensor over the IMX135 on the Yureka, and CyanogenMod 12S over Yurek...More
The Yu Yureka Plus is a slight functional upgrade over the Yureka. It looks the same from outside, performs similarly, and still has a weak battery strength. It gets an upgrade to a 1080p display, a better and faster Sony IMX214 sensor over the IMX135 on the Yureka, and CyanogenMod 12S over Yureka’s CM11. For Rs. 8,999, the Yu Yureka Plus remains a good proposition in a market segment that has numerous other competitors with similar specifications. If you want your cellphone to be more than just a good performer, the Yureka Plus is not recommendable for you. However, if you are concerned about service centres, then Micromax has plenty of service centres all across India, and getting to one should not be any problem. The Yu Yureka, individually, is a decent smartphone. But, with so much competition around, it is not one-of-a-kind any more.

I love this phone because it is tiny internal memory but we can expand memory by using external sd card
