What's good

  • Excellent sound quality
  • Small size for portability
  • Sync with up to 6 different devices

What's bad

  • Cannot charge via microUSB
  • No speakerphone capability

The Bose SoundLink Mini is, as the name suggests, a smaller version of the Bose SoundLink speaker. It measures 18 x 5 x 6 cm (7.1 x 2 x 2.3 inches) and weighs 680 grams. Although this is slightly bulkier than other mini Bluetooth speakers, reviewers still found it portable enough to be carried around in a backpack or handbag, though they mainly found it convenient to use around the house as it cannot be charged via the microUSB port. Instead, the SoundLink Mini comes included with the desktop charging cradle as well as an AC adapter that plugs directly into the device.

As with other portable speakers, the SoundLink Mini is Bluetooth enabled. It can remember up to six different devices and will automatically pair up when its within Bluetooth range.

Design-wise, the speaker's appearance is described as fairly plain with its metal grill face and aluminum shell. At 680 grams, this product is a bit heftier than its competitors, but Bose explains that the weight is due to large magnets that improve the bass. 9to5mac backs up this claim stating, "They are right, the bass on this thing is no joke…" Still, as a small speaker, experts do caution that the quality of the bass cannot compete with larger models. In general, reviewers were pleased with the sound quality describing it as very solid though they did notice the occasional popping at higher volumes.

Although it does its job well as a regular speaker, critics were a bit turned off by the fact that it doesn't have a mic and cannot be used as a speakerphone. Most mentioned that, while they do not use the feature often on similar devices, the lack of it could be a deal breaker for some consumers. Aside from this, reviewers were a bit put off by the fact that other additions such as a protective sleeve were not included and were also very expensive.

Despite a couple drawbacks, most reviews show that people are sufficiently impressed with the speaker and have no problem recommending it. Trusted Review states, "The Bose SoundLink Mini is portable, convenient, very well-made and powerful for its size." PC Mag goes on to say, "…it offers the best all-around sound quality we've seen in its category…"

Apple Insider

An exceptional Bluetooth speaker

from Apple Insider

The Bose SoundLink Mini isn't perfect. It's a little heavy, a little expensive, and there's no remote control. It doesn't have a microphone, so it can't be used for calls. It doesn't get as loud as some others, and it's not waterproof.

It doesn't matter. At various points, we've also spent time with Jawbone's Mini Jambox, the Beats Pill, UE's Boom, and JBL's Pulse, and there is simply no other speaker of this size that delivers the kind of full, room-filling sound that the SoundLink Mini is capable of. It may not be the best speaker for every situation, but it's the best one overall... Full review

Boasts excellent audio quality and booming bass for a speaker its size

from Tom's Guide
The Bose SoundLink Mini is a very good choice for those looking for excellent audio quality in a small, if heavy, Bluetooth speaker. If you plan to listen indoors, it creates the illusion that the sound is coming from a much bigger speaker. However, the Fugoo Style offers excellent sound... Full review
What Hi-Fi

This Bose is tiny, but its warm, rich bassy sound is music to our ears

from What Hi-Fi
Given the choice between a thin, sharp sound lacking in solid bass versus heaps of rich, deep bass and punchy sound, we’d go for the latter – especially in the case of this Bose speaker. It might not have all the features of some rivals, but its bass depth, build quality and confident delivery make the SoundLink Mini an outstanding contender at this price... Full review

The combination of great sound and a solid build make it well worth it for the music listener

from Android Authority
Though the Bose SoundLink Mini does share a few of the problems that all speakers in this class share, it’s a seriously impressive speaker all the same. The sound quality is excellent and the build quality is far and away the best I’ve seen yet in this type of product. At $199 it isn’t exactly cheap, but the combination of great sound and a solid build make it well worth it for the music listener. If you find yourself on the road a lot, or even if you don’t, the SoundLink Mini is definitely a top contender... Full review

The best wireless Bluetooth speaker I’ve ever heard

from Noobie
The only negative thing I can find with the Bose SoundLink Mini is the price. It will set you back about $200. But if you are as tired of small, tinny speakers as I am, you will gladly pay the extra money for the quality of this speaker.  .. Full review

Excellent sound quality and volume

from Turtletechie
The Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker provides you excellent sound quality and volume and will play your music with some of the best sound quality standards in the industry. The design in sleek and stylish and Bose even included additional ports so you can not only power your speaker when you are out of battery life, but also connect other devices that don’t support Bluetooth making this the only mini speaker you will ever need. Take it with you wherever you go and enjoy great sound as you listen to your favorite music... Full review
Expert Reviews

The SoundLink Mini seems distinctly overpriced, despite its beautiful styling

from Expert Reviews

Its lower mid-range sounds smooth and well rounded, too, but although its audio characteristics lend themselves to hip-hop, dance and even some metal, the speaker is not the all-rounder one might hope for. High-frequency sounds, particularly the upper registers of strings, brass and woodwind in chamber and orchestral music, sound a little harsh and become uncomfortable to listen to for an extended period. The emphatic bass also sounded artificially loud in these test tracks and is the first thing to distort when you push the volume up past the 80 per cent mark. Despite these complaints, the... Big sound in a tiny package

from Digital Trends
Bose’s SoundLink Mini cuts out the deep features and stylistic extras to provide an attractive, minimalist speaker with a rich and potent sound signature. The speaker got too big for its britches at times, and a little bass control would have gone a long way with us. Still, it succeeded more often than it failed, blending keen detail, wide dynamic expression, and powerful force for an enjoyable sonic experience that extended far beyond its slender form. If big sound in a tiny package is your primary objective, the Bose SoundLink Mini delivers the goods in spades... Full review
