tech2

A powerful well-designed Bluetooth speaker

Casual listeners looking for cheaper alternatives will need to put up with mono-sound speakers that aren’t particularly good with music. For those who really want to enjoy music, you’ll be hard pressed to find better alternatives with these features at a lower rate.

Chip Chick

A tough, tiny portable speaker that packs oomph

JBL really packed a lot of quality and value into this little portable speaker. Pricing in just under $100, we’ll hand it to JBL, the price is right.

It's a solid choice that we can happily recommend.

The Flip 3 is one of the best portable speakers under $100. Is it a UE Boom 2 killer? At half the price, yes it is. The Flip 3 impressively nears the UE Boom 2 in audio performance, but can't quite match up to its powerfully loud 360-degree sound output. That being said, if you're fine with a traditional front-firing directional speaker, the Flip 3 is an outstanding choice that offers a lot of value for your $100.

Greatly improves on the sound quality of previous generations

By comparison, the UE Roll doesn't have as much bass and lacks a speakerphone, but it's much more rugged and features a unique design. The Roll also features a better app that adds extra functionality, such as an alarm and EQ.

Since the Flip3 and the Xtreme are aimed more at the youth market than middle-aged journalists with a taste for Bach and coffee house jazz, we loaned the units to a 13-year old volunteer for evaluation. She found both very easy to master and connect to her smartphone, and regarded it as easy for even younger kids to use, but she found the playback very glitchy – especially for video soundtracks. On the whole, though, she rated it as "good for parties and rocking on your own."

JBL always had a good thing on its hands with the Flip series, but it seems like they rethought a couple of things that made the Flip 3 their best one yet. It was always small and portable, but the splashproofing and carrying string takes that to another level. It always looked nice, but now it’s rugged and gorgeous. It always sounded good, but now it has external bass radiators that really add depth to the low end without sacrificing anything else. Basically, it’s a better Flip in every way and seeing as the Flip 2 was one of the best speakers you can get for the price it makes sense that the Flip 3 is the new holder of that title.

If you're comparing this model to the JBL Charge 2+, which costs around $30 more, that speaker's a little larger, weighing 600 grams as opposed to 450, sounds a little better, and has 2 more hours of battery life, as well as a USB charging port to juice up your phone. Splash-proof portable Bluetooth speaker with powerful audio output for its size.

At $99.95, the JBL Flip3 gets just about everything right—the minor distortion on deep bass tracks is the only real gripe we have. For most genres, at moderate volumes, the speaker sounds great, and is definitely worth your consideration.

Pretty impressive without falling apart

from Oluv's Gadgets

The JBL Flip 3 gets my strong recommendation for anyone looking for a perfect all-around portable speaker that can be used outdoors or even become wet without damage. The sound is solid although doesn't set any new benchmarks. It simply sounds good and can play pretty loud without distortion.
