Comparisons will of course be made with the cheaper GoPro Hero 5 Black – I’d say the GoPro is the slightly better choice for adrenaline junkies, thanks to its quicker operation and built-in waterproofing. However, the FDR-X3000 is likely to be a draw for travel bloggers, since it’s just so convenient to carry around.
Read full reviewIt delivers excellent, ultra-wide angle video with optical stabilization, not a lot of distortion, 4K resolution, and strong audio quality. I'm also a big fan of having a standard tripod socket, as it's still easy to add an adapter for GoPro mounts and lets you use the camera with standard photographic equipment easily.

This tiny action cam’s nicely image stabilized 4K 30fps footage impresses, but an unreliable live view remote makes this variant of the cheaper FDR-X3000 of dubious value.

The Sony FDR-X3000R is a great 4K action camera and its two highlights in the form of the Balanced Optical SteadyShot system and Live-View Remote make it even more of a winner. This little action camera has a couple minor flaws but none of them detract from its generally high quality. Video stability is great in the X3000R.

It’s been a great tool and an enabler for adventures and even when I’m not doing anything active like skating, I can simply pop it on my fingers and capture my environment with no hassle. It’s incredible how Sony has managed to include BOSS in such a small camera body, and it deserves some plaudits for its performance.

Sony made some big improvements with the X3000R. When it comes to sharpness, bitrate, low light performance and image stabilization, it’s a better camera than GoPro. However, if all other action camera options are considered — like underwater performance, menu, housing, rolling shutter, color and field of view options — the HERO5 Black is a better option. With that said, the Sony FDR-X3000R a great camera that would be a good choice for most.
I think that this is actually the only action camera on the market that beats the newest GoPro Hero5 Black. Simply based on using the two separately, I’m really impressed with the Sony and do think that it’s the best camera at the moment.

What really sets this action camera apart from other handhelds currently available is the Balanced Optical SteadyShot technology. The noise and bump reductions are extremely impressive, and something that other companies like GoPro have not yet been able to perfect.

For broadcast, I think the camera is a serious challenge to GoPro’s dominance of the low end of the professional POV camera market. For any moving shot on a relatively stable platform like a car, plane, helicopter or bike I think the Sony would be a better choice of camera than the GoPro alone.
