The buyer gets a Windows tablet (Windows 8.1, 32 bit) for 349 Euros that can perform all common entertainment (except standard PC games) and Office programs at a decent speed. As one of the key selling points on a tablet, the display – save for the low resolution – is among the stronger points of the W4. I do wish it would get a bit brighter to help with readability under bright lights and when outdoors but otherwise, there isn’t much to complain about....

The Acer Iconia W4 is a huge improvement on its predecessor, largely thanks to the inclusion of an IPS screen and faster processor. It also narrowly bests the VivoTab Note 8 thanks to its faster eMMC storage, improved battery life and additional video output. At £250, it’s a good £...

The buyer gets a Windows tablet (Windows 8.1, 32 bit) for 349 Euros that can perform all common entertainment (except standard PC games) and Office programs at a decent speed. That is probably why Office Home & Student 2013 is included. Acer's Iconia W4-820 64 GB proves to be a rounded bundle with only few drawbacks. We think its biggest shortcoming is the sole micro-USB port. It is not possible to recharge the tablet when a USB stick is inserted. That is adverse when the W4 is to be used on the desk with external input devices and an external TFT. That is certainly an option in view of the acceptable Office performance (compared with entry Office laptops).

There's just no reason now to buy a Windows RT tablet and restrict yourself to the Modern UI and Windows Store apps. You might find yourself spending less and less time in the Windows desktop, but it's really good to know it's there, and that all familiar Windows software is just a few taps away.

You won't have the kind of tablet-optimised software library that we now take for granted on iOS and Android, so if you're willing to grapple with tiny on-screen controls in Windows desktop software, this is a decent option. Keep in mind that any specialised Windows software you need will have to run on the relatively puny Atom CPU.

As one of the key selling points on a tablet, the display – save for the low resolution – is among the stronger points of the W4. I do wish it would get a bit brighter to help with readability under bright lights and when outdoors but otherwise, there isn’t much to complain about. Viewing angles are excellent and color reproduction is very pleasing. I also didn’t run into any touch screen-related issues as everything worked as it should.

Looks great and can cut through basic computing tasks with ease

from TechRadar

If you pick up the Acer Iconia W4 tomorrow, you're unlikely to be disappointed. It can perform a far wider range of tasks than your average iPad or Android tablet thanks to the inclusion of Windows 8.1 and the ability to install legacy Windows programs.

However, you would be better off with one of the aforementioned platforms if you're looking for a more 'classic' app-driven tablet experience. If that's the case, a sharper screen and beefier processor can be found in Apple's iPad Mini with Retina...

However, you would be better off with one of the aforementioned platforms if you're looking for a more 'classic' app-driven tablet experience. If that's the case, a sharper screen and beefier processor can be found in Apple's iPad Mini with Retina.

Neither is it suitable as a full-on laptop or PC replacement if you're looking to run demanding programs requiring greater processing and graphical requirements.

But as a nippy, lightweight device for undertaking basic productivity tasks or entertainment, you would be hard pressed to find a more versatile device at this moment in time for the price.

The Acer Iconia W4 is a huge improvement on its predecessor, largely thanks to the inclusion of an IPS screen and faster processor. It also narrowly bests the VivoTab Note 8 thanks to its faster eMMC storage, improved battery life and additional video output. At £250, it’s a good £50 cheaper, too. It might be lacking in premium appeal, but the Iconia W4 is one of the most promising Windows 8 tablets we’ve seen yet.
