Know Your Mobile

The Asus MeMo Pad 10 has nothing in its locker to make you sit up and take notice and for a little less or more outlay

Given the price the Memo Pad Smart 10 retails at you can't really expect it to move mountains. So the question here is: are you getting good value for money?Sort of – but also, not really. You see the MeMo Pad's retail price isn't all that low in context to other tablets of similar spec, which begs the question: what am I paying for? Turns out that you're paying slightly more than 'proper' budget offerings for what amounts to an HDMI-out port and not much more....

The Asus MeMo Pad Smart 10 might look a bit more of an attractive proposition when/if the Android 4.2 update enters the equation but until then we'd save some pennies, sacrifice some screen real estate, and get the Nexus 7 instead.

It's easily one of the most affordable 10 inch Android tablets around

While the specifications aren't up to snuff with the tablets we're seeing ship today, it's easy to see that the Memo Pad 10 wasn't made to woo you with bleeding edge specs. It's an affordable, yet capable tablet, and that's all it needs to be. The market needs and option like this, and that's why this tablet exists.

Isn’t a bad choice for prospective tablet buyers on a budget

If you have ever looked at a Nexus 7 and thought to yourself “I would be all over that if it was larger and had a few more ports,” you may have just found your new favorite tablet. Even if you haven’t, the ASUS MeMO Pad Smart 10 isn’t a bad choice for prospective tablet buyers on a budget. That said, if you need a little more and are willing to pay more for it, Google’s Nexus 10 or something in ASUS’s own Transformer line would likely be a better choice.

Like so many of Asus’s Android tablets, the Asus MeMO Pad Smart 10 excels at being practical. On the plus side it's fairly cheap and comes with expandable memory and a decent processor. However, on the flip side, the screen isn't all that great and the cameras also disappoint. Its biggest problem, however, is the Google Nexus 10, which for only £50 more offers a lot more tablet for the money.

Computer Shopper

A well-built, attractive, and reasonably strong-performing Android tablet

from Computer Shopper

That said, the MeMO Pad Smart just might be the best full-size tablet you can buy for under $300, unless you find some of the others mentioned in this review on deep discount. If you have to have a big-screen Android tablet now, and $300 is all your budget allows, we think this one is a smart buy. Just be aware of the compromises.

It's hard not to like the Asus MeMO Pad Smart 10: for the price it's an excellent buy. You get a name brand tablet from a company with a proven Android track record, a sharp (albeit not super high resolution) IPS display, a solid Nvidia Tegra 3 CPU with GeForce graphics and the usual compliment of wireless. There's no NFC, but I doubt many will care, and there's currently no 3G/4G option, but the basics including a strong GPS are there. Though internal storage didn't benchmark well, in daily use we didn't suffer any serious slow downs or errors. And though 16 gigs of internal storage isn't much by today's standards, it can easily be augmented with microSD cards and USB flash drives. If you're shopping for a reasonably priced Android tablet that doesn't sacrifice on basic features, this is it.

Lacks a super-high-resolution display; overall plastic feel

What bothers me the most about the MemoPad is that it's forgettable. It's not all that smooth or fun to use. It only currently runs Jelly Bean 4.1.2. This isn't the most up-to-date hardware or software in the Android universe, and the price isn't all that rock-bottom. It all adds up to a product released with an odd sense of timing, as if it might disappear sooner than later to be replaced with a better version.

As I said at the beginning, I went in to this review expecting to be reviewing a 2012 tablet in 2013. In a way, that's exactly what I got. But the MeMO Pad Smart is much more, and is actually better than many of 2012's offerings, especially from ASUS. Sure, it doesn't have a nifty keyboard dock that nearly doubles the battery life, a hi-res display, or the latest version of Android (right now), but it does have a fantastic set of speakers, solid performance, and a likeable fit and finish. Is it the best tablet on the market? No. Far from it. But for $300, it's a good buy, so long as you can get past the 1280x800 display. That's honestly the only thing holding me back from giving the MeMO two big thumbs up. If ASUS would've taken a bit more of a hit and threw a 1920x1200 panel in here for the same price, this device would've been one of the best budget tablets money could buy.

The ASUS MeMo Pad Smart 10 offers a great value of specs for the money, assuming the lower resolution screen isn't a burden on your eyes. You're getting a quality set of hardware specs inside of a lightweight, attractive and well built case -- and it's at least $100 cheaper than other 10-inch offerings from major manufacturers. Make no mistake, you're not getting this year's specs, but you're definitely getting more than the price would lead you to expect.

In all fairness, the Asus MeMO Pad Smart 10 is a wonderful option if you’re on a tight budget for a 10” tablet; It has enough of a well-rounded performance to propel it over other comparable models, and the $300 price point that’s attached to it is absolutely dreamy for something that’s targeting the full-sized tablet segment of the market, which is undeniably competitive in many aspects. Frankly speaking, the MeMO Pad Smart 10 might not be blessed with the same notoriety as some of the other renowned models that Asus is known to concoct, but heck, it’s undoubtedly a good option for consumers who don’t want to shell out a whole lot on a very GOOD performing tablet.
